Cinegear 2014: Hive Lighting & The Benefits Of Plasma Lighting

Every show we try to speak with some sort of lighting company. This year’s Cinegear introduced us to Hive Lighting, a Los Angeles based lighting company that specializes in plasma lighting. We stopped to talk with Hive’s John Miller about the nature of plasma lighting and their newest product, the Bee Plasma Flood.

For those unfamiliar with plasma lights, Miller explains it simply as “the output of an HMI (a very bright, daylight balanced source) with the energy efficiency of an LED. So it uses 50-90% less power than the traditional tungsten and HMI sources you’re used to using.”

Miller then introduced us to their newest light, the Bee Plasma Flood light. The Bee has a 100 degree beam field and is a tunable, flicker free, daylight lamp. This allows you to tune the light from 4600 to 7000 kelvin, and its light will even shifts with the sunlight itself, freeing you from constant gel swaps and micromanaging.

The Bee Plasma Flood has several different power options. The first is a single, standard AC power supply that plugs into the wall. It pulls two and a half amps, allowing you to plug in about seven into a wall socket with no issue. Second is a double AC power supply, which runs two heads off of one power supply, meaning less weight, less cost, and less to pack. Lastly there is an AC In option, allowing you to plug it into the wall as well as a battery pack.

Miller also explains that Hive has three rental houses of their owen in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York in addition to being in several others accross the US. He suggests that it is a great way to try out their lights before comitting to buying them, which you can do direct from Hive as well as a number of dealers.
