During Band Pro and Panasonic’s recent partnership event we spoke with cinematographer Ben Kufrin (The Bounce Back) who recently tested the VariCam LT for an upcoming pilot, taking it into a live music club with stunning results.
Shooting in 4K at 5000 ISO, the image looks fantastic. Kufrin notes that he didn’t have the chance to color grade the footage, only applying a quick REC 709 Panasonic LUT to it. He notes that the camera’s low light capabilities are very powerful, as you can see from the footage above. And Kufrin was obviously impressed, as he does plan on using the VariCam LT for his upcoming pilot. Though he is quick to clarify that the low light capabilities are not its only strengths:
I’ve used it in other situations…and it produces beautifully at the 800 ISO or the 5000. But when you really do a stress test like I did on this it’s kind of to say ‘This is different, this is different than other cameras, you don’t get to be able to work at those light levels and expect to have the kind of results that you have.”
